Updating Your Marketplace Plan: Reporting Income & Household Changes

If your income or household situation changes while you're enrolled in a Marketplace plan, update your application immediately. Changes like a shift in income, adding or losing household members, or getting other health coverage offers can affect your eligibility for coverage and savings. You might need to submit documents to confirm your income after updating.

Why it's important:

  • Income increases or fewer household members: You may get less savings and could owe money when filing taxes if not reported.
  • Income decreases or more household members: You might qualify for more savings, or even free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid or CHIP.

If needed, you may also need to cancel your plan, such as when starting Medicare or getting job-based insurance.

Key Changes to Report to the Marketplace

Report these changes right away to ensure your coverage and savings are accurate:

  • Income Changes: Update your income estimate if it changes.

  • Health Coverage Changes:

    • Someone in your household gets or loses job-based insurance, Medicaid, CHIP, or Medicare.
    • If a household member gets job-based coverage, you may need to cancel your Marketplace plan.
  • Household Changes:

    • Birth, adoption, pregnancy, marriage, divorce, or death.
    • A child on your plan turns 26.
    • Moving to a new address within the same state.
  • Status Changes:

    • Updates to disability, tax filing, citizenship, immigration, or tribal status.
    • Incarceration or release from incarceration.

Update your application on the Marketplace to report these changes.

How to Report a Move

The steps to report a move depend on whether you're moving within the same state or to a different state.

If You Move Within the Same State:

  • Update your application to reflect your new address. While your coverage options and savings are unlikely to change based solely on a new address, you will be notified if you need to choose a new plan.

If You Move to a Different State:

  • Important: You cannot keep your current plan when moving to a different state. It's crucial to report your move right away to enroll in a new plan without a gap in coverage and avoid paying for coverage that no longer applies.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Log in to your Marketplace account.
  2. Go to your applications and select the coverage year and your new state.
    • If your new state runs its own Marketplace, you’ll need to apply through that state’s website. You can find your state on the provided list.
  3. Select "Apply or Renew" to start a new application.
  4. Complete your application for your new state, then compare available plans and prices. Choose a plan and pay your first month’s premium to finalize your enrollment.

How to Cancel Your Marketplace Plan

If you need to end your Marketplace insurance plan, whether due to gaining new health coverage or other reasons, the process varies depending on your specific situation.

When and how you cancel your plan depends on:

  • The reason for canceling: This could include getting a job-based plan, qualifying for Medicaid or Medicare, or simply choosing to end your coverage.
  • Who is being removed from the plan: You may be canceling coverage for the entire household or just certain individuals.
