Health care coverage options for military veterans

More info

If you’re enrolled in TRICARE or a Veterans health care program, you’re already covered under the health care law and don’t need to make any changes.

Veterans Programs That Meet Coverage Requirements

If you’re enrolled in or benefit from any of the following programs, you have qualifying health coverage under the law:

  • Veterans health care program
  • VA Civilian Health and Medical Program (CHAMPVA)
  • Spina bifida health care benefits program
  • TRICARE

If you’re a veteran who hasn’t yet enrolled in VA health care, visit the VA health care website to check if you qualify for coverage.

For more details on veterans and the Affordable Care Act, visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website.

If You Don’t Have Veterans Coverage

Veterans who aren’t enrolled in VA benefits or other veterans health coverage can obtain insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace®. Depending on your household size and income, you might qualify for lower costs on premiums and out-of-pocket expenses, or you could be eligible for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

If Your Dependents Aren’t Covered

If you’re a veteran enrolled in a VA health care program, your dependents who aren’t eligible for VA coverage can still get insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace®. Based on household size and income, they may qualify for reduced premiums and out-of-pocket costs, or for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid or CHIP.

Notice:

TRICARE’s young adult coverage rules differ from those of the Affordable Care Act. The eligibility ages, benefits, and other details are not the same.
