Important Tax Filing Information for Marketplace Coverage in 2023
If you had Marketplace coverage at any time during 2023, it’s essential to file your taxes and “reconcile” your premium tax credit. To do this, you’ll need to use Form 1095-A to complete IRS Form 8962, which helps determine the correct amount of premium tax credit you were eligible for. Here’s what to expect:
If You Used More Credit Than You Qualified For: You may owe additional taxes if you received more premium tax credit than you were eligible for in 2023. This excess must be reported on your 2023 tax return using Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit (PDF, 110 KB).
If You Used Less Credit Than You Qualified For: You might be eligible for a refund or a reduction in the amount of taxes you owe if you used less premium tax credit than you were eligible for. You could also receive an increase in your premium tax credit when reconciling. Form 8962 must still be included with your tax return to document this.
If Your Electronic Return Was Rejected: If you filed your tax return electronically and it was rejected due to a missing Form 8962, you’ll need to complete the form and resubmit your return. Alternatively, if there’s a valid reason for not including Form 8962, you’ll need to provide an explanation. Learn how to correct and successfully refile your electronic return.

Next Steps & Tax Forms
To ensure you file your taxes correctly, select the type of health coverage you had in 2023. Different tax forms and steps may apply depending on your coverage:
Marketplace plan with the premium tax credit: You enrolled in a Marketplace plan and used premium tax credits to lower your monthly payments.
Marketplace plan without the premium tax credit: You enrolled in a Marketplace plan but paid the full price because you either didn’t qualify for or didn’t apply for a premium tax credit.
Job-based health coverage: You had coverage through a job, a retiree health plan, COBRA, or the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP).
Other health coverage: You were covered by a plan outside the Marketplace, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or another source.
No health coverage: You had no health coverage for all or most of 2023.
